Long-term Periodicities of Cataclysmic Variables with Synoptic Surveys

چکیده
A systematic study on the long-term periodicities of known Galactic cataclysmic variables (CVs) was conducted. Among 1580 known CVs, 344 sources were matched and extracted from the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) data repository. The PTF light curves were combined with the Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey (CRTS) light curves and analyzed. Ten targets were found to exhibit long-term periodic variability, which is not frequently observed in the CV systems. These longterm variations are possibly caused by various mechanisms, such as the precession of the accretion disk, hierarchical triple star system, magnetic field change of the companion star, and other possible mechanisms. We discuss the possible mechanisms in this study. If the long-term period is less than several tens of days, the disk precession period scenario is favored. However, the hierarchical triple [email protected] ar X iv :1 70 6. 06 73 1v 1 [ as tr oph .S R ] 2 1 Ju n 20 17 2 YANG, Michael T.C. et al. star system or the variations in magnetic field strengths are most likely the predominant mechanisms for longer periods.

Seismology of the Accreting White Dwarf in Gw Lib
We present a first analysis of the g-mode oscillation spectrum for the white dwarf (WD) primary of GW Lib, a faint cataclysmic variable (CV). Stable periodicities have been observed from this WD for a number of years, but their interpretation as stellar pulsations has been hampered by a lack of theoretical models appropriate to an accreting WD. Using the results of Townsley and Bildsten, we con...

We present extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of PTF1 J071912.13+485834.0, an outbursting AM CVn system discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). AM CVn systems are stellar binaries with some of the smallest separations known and orbital periods ranging from 5 to 65 minutes. They are believed to be composed of a white dwarf accretor and a (semi)degenerate He-rich dono...
متن کاملDiscovery of Two New Faint Cataclysmic Variables ⋆
We report on the discovery of two new faint cataclysmic variables. The objects were selected as candidates from two different imaging surveys aimed at the discovery of such faint systems. One survey used color and variability while the other used color and Hα emission as selection criteria. We present our spectra of the two new variables and discuss their properties. A discussion of the implica...
متن کاملCataclysmic variables
Cataclysmic variables are binary stars in which a relatively normal star is transferring mass to its compact companion. This interaction gives rise to a rich range of behaviour, of which the most noticeable are the outbursts that give the class its name. Novae belong to the class, as do the less well known dwarf novae and magnetic systems. Novae draw their energy from nuclear reactions, while d...
